Myself & Gary Swindley have worked hard together to create the TOC for the anthology & enjoyed reading so many strong subs.

Submissions Call for ‘When Darkness Calls’ Now Closed
The subs call for for our first publication is now closed.
We really want to thank you all for sending in your work for consideration, we have had an amazing amount of help offered to put this charity publication together; from the cover from the great Daniele Serra, Formatting from Donnie Light…the list is endless!
We have received submissions from a whole range of writers, from well-known established names in the Horror genre, to those names we’ve all heard of on best-seller lists, right through to unpublished writer…real diamonds in the rough.
Now is our reading period, myself, Gary Swindley, Adrian Chamberlin & Steven Chapman (all of whom some of you may know from my horror fiction site The Horrifically Horrifying Horror Blog) are all part of the Submissions Team & will spend the festive season reading non-stop! Everyone who has submitted will be contacted in the New Year to confirm either way, all will be given feedback.

Welcome to the halls of Screaming Spires Press, we’re a new publishing house that actively seeks out new & published writers who create tales of great old-school horror.
Our first publication will be released in early March. There is still room for submissions, the closing date is December 16th.
When Darkness Calls will be an anthology of dark & brooding old-school horror…something to chill your skin & rattle your bones.
All proceeds will go to charity, to help children with autism reach their full potential & encourage awareness.
A special school, who also provide holiday camps for autistic children in Chernobyl, & the charity Autism Awareness will benefit from funds raised by sales of the book itself.
We will be going straight to print, initially there will be limited editions available for pre-order in the New Year. These will include signed letter-plates as well as a bonus tale…as the first Screaming Spires’ publication we hope this will prove to be something as special & unique as those we’re helping!

The Wait is Almost Over…
For all those who’ve waited patiently for the TOC for ‘When Darkness Calls’, the wait is almost over.
The official TOC will be announced this Friday night.
Emails will be sent out to all, including contracts where appropriate.
What I can say is that there has been an astounding amount of some fantastic pieces of dark fiction submitted, here at Screaming Spires we thank each & every one of the writers who’ve submitted, those who’ve have kindly offered to donate their time & expertise to aid this charity anthology.
There will be a range of enthralling, thrilling & fearful reads for you all, so be sure to spread the word & help us make this a great success!
Submission Guidelines for ‘When Darkness Calls’
- Word count is 1,800-7,000. The manuscript should be as edited as possible & to have the title, along with your name, clearly marked on the attachment.
If your submission comes in above or below stated word count, please contact Emma Audsley via the contact page to discuss and attain advice. - The general theme of the anthology is dark and brooding horror; supernatural, noir horror, old –school style horror, thriller, urban horror, psychological horror, ghost stories…these are just examples. We are seeking tales that get under the skin that leaves a chill down the reader’s spine in its wake. True, pure, unfathomable horror.
- We will NOT accept pieces that fall under these areas: ‘gore-porn’, extreme sexual content, rape, violence towards children, anything overtly derogatory towards any of the following; race, creed, gender, religious stances, sexual preference, disabled people, or class. If it does not add anything intangible and integral to the story, leave it out!
- All submissions will be viewed equally. Previous publications will not affect any decision on possible inclusion of this publication.
- All profits from this anthology will be donated to charity. A special school (Pictor School in Cheshire, UK) will receive donations, as will Autism Awareness. The only amounts held back will be the fee that I have personally paid in order to get this first publication into print.
- All successful contributors are required to allow rights of exclusivity to Screaming Spires Publishing for the anthology their work appears in, in this case being ‘When Darkness Calls’.
- All who submit will receive notice via email of either acceptance or rejection, some may receive enquiries concerning the suitability of their submission for a future publication. In this case, the author will be asked for permission for their work to be kept on file. Please note that this does not in any way affect the rights and ownership of the submission. It will remain the sole property of the author.
- FINAL ENTRY DATE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS DECEMBER 16TH. If anyone requires additional time please email us as soon as possible.
All successful contributors will be encouraged to attend launch events and readings. Details of upcoming events will be sent out in advance and definitive confirmations or declines received would be appreciated.
